Horses for Heroes ™
Our Mission:
“To provide access to professionally recognized equine and nature-based educational and therapeutic opportunities to people from all walks of life.”
In Honor of Our Veterans and their Families...
Horses For Heroes® is a national program offered by NARHA Centers across the country. We are planning to offer a pilot program in 2011 to honor and thank military personnel and their families who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. Our hope is to offer several programs in 2011 including:
· Horses For Heroes Days: a 1-day program each month from April thru October to honor military personnel and their families/people who support them. Open to past and present military personnel as well as anyone whose life has been touched by relationship with someone who has sacrificed for military service to our country.
· Beyond Charlie: a group to support veterans and their loved ones whose lives continue to be affected by experiences of war-time service. This group is in honor of Melvin D Cohen, a veteran of the US Army who served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, and lived 50+years with the haunting memories of front line battles and untreated PTSD. Toward the end of his life he began to tell comrades how courageous it is to come together to help each other heal.
We hope for all programs to begin with a campfire meal and to include activities for veteran’s family members including children, partners, parents and other significant persons who can benefit from healing time in nature and time to learn more about integrating military service experience into a healthy life and relationship.
We will need generous donors and volunteers so this program can be available to all who want to participate regardless of ability to pay. Our preference is to offer it without it costing participants or the government a penny. (NARHA is North American Riding for the Handicapped Association.)
